Our History

From Farmland and Forest to Golfing Gem: The Story of Pine Hill Golf Club

In 1965, amidst northwest Pennsylvania’s foothills, Charles “Chub” Loreno dared to dream. He, along with his brother, envisioned a golf course that embraced the farmland and forest on the 100-acres of land they owned in Sugar Grove Township, Mercer County. Mr. Loreno was an excavation contractor, and started shaping a nine-hole course out of the farmland surrounded by woodlands. By 1967, Pine Hill Golf Course was open for play.

As golf surged in popularity, so did Pine Hill's appeal. The public golf course catered to the blue-collar workers who were employed by the many railroads and manufacturing mills in the area, and became a haven for golf leagues and every day play. In 1970, nine more holes unfolded through the woods, gracefully weaving around the original layout, creating the beloved 18-hole course we know today.

But ambition didn't stop there. Soon, Chub’s son CB joined him in the business. They understood the need for a clubhouse that matched the course's spirit. They soon began building a structure that matched the natural woodlands at Pine Hill. The clubhouse still houses the pro shop, and is now home to the new “Chub’s Pub” restaurant and bar.

For 52 years, Chub and CB Loreno nurtured Pine Hill, crafting a community woven with laughter, friendly competition, and a shared love for the game of golf. Today, under the stewardship of new owners Chris, Rod & Tyler, the journey continues.

The legacy of Pine Hill lives on in the recent renovations that breathe new life into the clubhouse, pro shop, golf course, and equipment barn. Upgraded tee boxes and fairways, improved driving range tees, paved cart paths, a venue for outings and large gatherings, and 72 new golf cars are evidence of continued commitment to excellence. The future holds promise of further enhancements, ensuring Pine Hill remains a must-play in the Northwest Pennsylvania area.

Come, experience the fun for yourself. Walk the fairways where dreams were nurtured, feel the spirit of community, and discover why Pine Hill Golf Club is more than just a round of golf. It's a treasured piece of Mercer County’s golfing history, and a tribute to the Loreno’s vision of fun, fast and affordable golf for everyone!
